In my life I look beyond the function of objects and their appropriate placement in my surroundings. From friezes to lampshades to shoes and bows I am obsessed with the language of tangible objects, dress and ornamentation. I am interested in material culture and how this relates to identity, culture, and time.
When I approach my work I use 3 themes- skin, body and culture. Each sculpture begins with the examination of found objects, photographs, magazines, fabrics and interior spaces. The parts influence the assemblage and composition of the pieces. Collectively, the objects become a visual representation of a person, culture or place. Consequentially, during construction the items are used as substitutions for the body.
In my process the clay is used and manipulated like a thin or thick layer of skin. I use the versatility and characteristics of clay to translate emotions. I want you to see the limits of the material.
My work creates a voice for the objects in our lives.
